Blackwater Trail

Traditional Cache GC15TE3

Hopefully soon it will form part of a series of caches along the Blackwater Trail in Essex

It is a traditional cache hidden besides the only remaining wooden railway viaduct in the country. It formed part of the Witham to Maldon railway, which opened in 1848, and closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching Act, -- or went to sleep depending on your point of view.

Parking at location N 51° 46.444 E 0° 38.422 on the side of the road B1018 just before the bridge.

Walk across the road towards the bridge and follow the right of way footpath through the gate "Mill Cottage". Then follow the track, after you turn the first corner you will see an information board about 25 metres in front of you by a wall, from here you will get the first glimpse of the viaduct. Continue along the track towards the mill cottage there you will see the right of way footpath marker. Follow that and just round the corner you'll see the viaduct.

You can view the viaduct on google maps by clicking on picture below if you wish, its not a spoiler. If you follow the viaduct downwards the bottom house you get to was the old Wickham Bishops Station, and although you can not get to see this as its now a private house google maps shows the old station platform quite well. Once the map is open you can zoom in by moving the slider up to get a better view.
